It’s really amazing to see how far Shopify has come along and with Shopify online store 2.0 being launched here are some interesting facts.
You might be surprised to know that Shopify was initially an online store created to sell snowboards. The funny thing is that before Shopify was Shopify it was called Snowdevil. When it became an eCommerce platform they started calling it Jaded Pixel.
It seems like Shopify had invested a great time in coming up with catchy names! Now Shopify 2.0! This name really reflects their revamping stage.
It was 2006 when Shopify got properly established. Ever since it has been one of the leading eCommerce platforms. As 2010 began, the world started to put greater emphasis on usability. Shopify adopted this concept and that is how it became one of the easiest eCommerce builders in the market.
Less Code More Features
Shopify made an announcement recently that it’s going to make its platform code-free. If you have no technical background, Shopify’s upcoming features can come in handy. Plus a new Shopify 2.0 theme will be allotted by default.
Let’s see how to go about it:
1. New Editor Experience
Shopify is calling it “online Store 2.0”. You could build your store quickly using their customized themes. The wonderful news is that it is not limited to the developers only, you would get a full grip on it.
You could personally handle your Shopify store and play around with these features to build a store of your choice.
2. Section Tweaking
Previously, block section edits could be made on home pages only. Developers had to initiate code changes and block redesigning to carry out edits on other pages. It seemed like a daunting task. However, with the new JSON template file, things will become a lot easier. You will achieve the appearance and behavior of your choice. You will steer the control of your pages using sections. This includes setting up blog posts, collections, or custom pages.
Think of the JSON template file as a repository where you create the settings and define them accordingly i.e. which section will appear in which area. The JSON template file offers all the commands on how the sections could be placed and in which arrangement.
When you have to boost the acceleration of a car the mechanic tunes the throttle body. This is how your car breathes. Think of the JSON template file as the throttle body of a car, tuning it will thus reflect the changes.
3. Flexible App Structure
Shopify puts attention to thoughtful details or design considerations. Previously, further changes to UI components on a specific page weren’t allowed. A whole integration logic had to be developed to reflect UI changes. However, with Shopify 2.0, you’ll be given the option to add or remove UI components using the new theme editor.
There’s no question as to why Shopify is highly rated for usability. Shopify online store 2.0 will surely be a head-turner!
4. Meta Fields – An icing on top
Have you ever wanted to display additional information about your product but Shopify’s limited scope holds you back? Worry no more! Through Shopify online store 2.0 you will be given leverage to add extra content, description, or anything that could help potential buyers make a more informed purchase decision.
If there is anything your store editor would limit you with, you would simply use the meta fields section and type the desired content you would want to display on your store.
Shopify online store 2.0, you could import media, images, or PDF files easily to a specific page.
5. GitHub is here to save the day
The frustration is real when you see your store theme being used elsewhere. Shopify online store 2.0 will give you the leverage of building new themes and apps from scratch. The testing and deployment of the theme will be made even easier, giving you the chance to streamline your results.
Shopify 2.0 will allow GitHub integration. You’ll now be able to hook up your GitHub account directly to your store. All the code will be transferred to your GitHub account with just a click. This way tracking and managing all the necessary changes to the code will become even more aligned.
Consider Github as your safety net. All the code is first overseen and then pushed to the theme. It’s safer and error-free.

- Now you can develop, preview, and test changes in the already developed themes
- Publish themes directly from the command line
- Lay out dummy data for testing purposes
- The new CLI will help to initialize a theme project with default ‘damn’ theme
- Injecting new files while editing at runtime, in other words, you could now Hot Reload CSS and liquid display section which will change all because of the new dev server.
7. Theme Checker
Theme checker? What Shopify theme is it?
It’s always better to be safe than sorry. This applies to all aspects of your project. Shopify online store 2.0 is introducing a new language-based server for JSON and liquid called the ‘theme checker’. This tool will permit you to highlight any errors in your Shopify theme.
It identifies the following issues in your theme code. For instance:
- Liquid syntax errors
- Missing templates
- Unused variables and snippets
- Unknown and deprecated tags
- Excessive snippet nesting
- Performance issues
You can use theme check this way:
- Through Shopify CLI – Check running against the theme
- As a Visual Studio Code plugin – Adding theme check to the Visual Studio Code to get a real-time validation of your theme code, comprising bugs and auto-completion.
- As a plugin for another editor – Integrate theme check with any editor that implements an LSP client.
8. Shopify 2.0 theme
The revamping will introduce Shopify 2.0 theme called ‘Dawn’. This theme will help you get started with building your store, testing, and previewing accordingly. What’s great about this theme is that it will have all the mentioned features integrated by default. A big reason to call it Shopify 2.0 theme.
Dawn will be highly optimized and load 35% quicker than debut, the theme that is widely used by merchants.
All in All
Shopify online store 2.0 is headed in the right direction and paving the way into the future of eCommerce. Building a flexible and robust platform where not only developers could dominate but control is given to the store owners as well. It’s a brilliant idea!
